What's the problem with Ghetto Neighborhood's
Figure 1 |
Imagine a hot summer day and you're riding your bikes with your friends through your neighborhood where all you guys live in and you're heading to your community pool to hang out for the day. Now picture the same summer day but your in the city but there are no skyscrapers there are just a lot of broken houses with a lot of trash around them. There are police sirens in the distance and your parents won't let you out because they're afraid you're going to get hurt if you go out. The picture (figure 1) shows you what a ghetto neighborhood looks like.

A ghetto neighborhood is a place where there is a lot of poverty and crime that usually has a high minority population. An example of a minority population is African Americans, they make up most of the ghetto neighborhoods in America. There are some reasons for that back then in the early 1900's when the cities were getting popular they didn't allow black people to live near or with white people. This term is called Redlining and it means the systematical way to deny services to people often due to their race. It is now illegal today but it happened a lot back then and it is a cause of the ghetto neighborhoods to start. In figure 2 it shows you an example of this where a guy wants to build houses in a city but the banker who has to give him a loan to build the houses won't let him because it is near a Back neighborhood.

Why is a ghetto neighborhood so bad? A ghetto neighborhood isn't your typical neighborhood. For the first reason there is a lot of crime in these places a lot more than your neighborhood you live in. According to ESRI “People living in the US that have an income level below the Federal poverty threshold have more than double the rates of violent victimization compared to individual in high income households” (4) If you look at figure three it shows that Black people are put in jail more than any other race and a cause of this could be that they live in mostly bad neighborhoods where there is a lot more crime. Another part of the crimes is gangs. They are a big problem in these types of places and they cause a lot of problems in these neighborhoods. They bring drugs, violence, and they give the neighbored a name because people think that's a bad place when gangs are there.
Can you picture yourself riding your bike with your friends through these neighborhoods? Kids that live here have a rougher time growing up but there are a lot of people out there trying to help these places out and trying to make them better where kids that live here can go out and have fun with there friends on a hot summer day.
